Single Life in London

英語が難しく感じる瞬間のひとつに「aまたはanとtheの使い分け」があります。これを考えて使うと話ができなくなってしまうので、いつも適当にしゃべっていて、英会話がまったく上達しないひとつの理由だと勝手に思っている。

英会話の先生が見せてくれた紙にはこんなことが書いてある。OXFORD UNIVERSITYの無料サイトからの引用らしい。

例文

A man from California was spending a month in Britain. One day he booked into a hotel in Cheltenhan, a nice old town in the West of England. Then he went out to look around the place. But the man didn't return to the hotel. He disappeared, leaving a suitcase full of clothed behind. The police were called in, but they were unable to find out what had happened to the missing tourist. It was a mistery. But two weeks later the man walked into the police station in Cheltenham. He explained that he was very sorry, but while walking around the town, he had got lost. He had forgotten the name of the hotel he had booked into. So he had decided to continue with his tour of the country and had gone to visit a friend in Scotland before returning to pick up the case he had left behind.

A/an poes only with a singular noun. With a plural or an uncountable noun we use some.

The goes with both singular and plural nouns and with uncountable nouns.
He needed the case. (Singular)
He needed the cases. (Plural)
He needed tbe luggage. (uncountable)

ということです。いきなり「the」を使うケースとしては、例文にある「the police」とか「the navy」など組織そのものの場合。でも、「the MI6」とは言わないなぁと行っていました。また、例文にあるとおり「the West of England」みたいに方角を示すとき、「the center of London」みたいになります。
それ以外は、最初に話の中で登場した場合は、a/anを使うことになります。
I have a car. The car is on the blink. （私は車を持っています。その車は壊れています。）って、r低文が悪いか。on the blink　で故障中のようです。

あと、suitcaseの発音を注意されました。スーツケースではなく、スートゥケースということで、sがあるかのごとく発音してはだめだということです。
